Picture this a sprawling grassy expanse ringed by majestic royal palms. This is Palm Circle the heart of Fort Shafter. Palm Circle isn’t just any circle it’s a historic landmark a silent witness to pivotal moments in history.

Established in 1907 Palm Circle served as a cantonment for an infantry battalion. Barracks and officer quarters surrounded a parade field creating a serene yet strategic setting. The 2d Battalion 20th Infantry Regiment made it their home. The circle grew expanding from its initial layout.

World War II transformed Palm Circle dramatically. It became the nerve center for US Army forces in the Pacific. The commanding general and his staff directed operations from here. By 1944 this command oversaw the supply and administration of all US Army personnel in the Central and South Pacific. Logistical planning for the invasions of the Gilberts Marshalls Marianas Guam Palau and Okinawa originated within these very walls.

Three office buildings colloquially known as the Pineapple Pentagon stood at the heart of these operations. Richardson Hall is the only building clearly visible from the circle because of the terrain. These structures boast multistory underground bunkers and fortified service tunnels connecting them. General Robert C Richardson Jr. oversaw the Army’s Pacific operations from these facilities from 1943 until the war’s end.

Imagine the weight of history here the decisions made the lives impacted. Palm Circle is more than just a pretty circle it’s a powerful symbol of strategic planning and wartime resilience. It’s a place where history unfolds before your eyes. It’s a testament to the dedication and courage of those who served. It’s Palm Circle a place of immense historical significance.
