Picture the Palazzo della Banca di Praga. Its imposing facade stands proudly on the corner of Via Roma and Via Mazzini. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to a bygone era a story etched in stone and bronze.

The Palazzo della Banca di Praga began its life between 1911 and 1914. The Trieste city administration decided to widen Via Ponterosso now Via Roma. This important thoroughfare connected the old and new parts of the city. The increased vehicle traffic made it difficult for pedestrians. New plots of land became available. The Banca di Praga acquired one and built its headquarters offices and apartments. Architects Josip Costaperaria and Osvald Polívka designed this stunning building.

The Palazzo della Banca di Praga’s architecture is a fascinating blend of styles. It seamlessly merges late Secessionist influences from Central Europe with elements of Rationalism. The lower section houses the original bank offices. Large windows boast checkered metal frames. The upper section originally contained apartments. Here you see smaller arched rectangular windows. They are framed in light-colored stone. Subtle projections on two levels culminate in polygonal terraces. Small balconies top these terraces.

A monumental entrance graces the Via Roma side. A grand staircase leads to the entrance. Flanking the staircase stand two bronze statues. They represent Labor and Industry. Sculptor Ladislav Šaloun created these impressive figures. They weren’t installed until 1926. World War I delayed their arrival from Prague.

In 1928 the Banca d’America e d’Italia took over the building. They made several interior changes. The polygonal window in the waiting room was removed in 1957. The original spiral staircase was replaced in 1986. A three-part orthogonal staircase now stands in its place.

Since 1995 a Deutsche Bank branch has occupied the Palazzo della Banca di Praga. Yet remnants of the past remain. The ironwork on the Via Mazzini entrance still bears the initials “dB” for Zivnostenska Banka.

The Palazzo della Banca di Praga continues to stand as a silent witness to Trieste’s rich history. Its blend of architectural styles its impressive bronze statues. Its story unfolds before your very eyes. A lasting reminder of Trieste’s unique past.
