Overlooking the shimmering Bay of Palma stands the Palau de Marivent. Can you hear the whispers of “Sea and Wind”, the palace’s name in Majorcan? It’s a name that speaks to the very essence of this place, a haven sculpted by the elements. The Palau de Marivent wasn’t always a royal residence. In 1923, a Greek engineer named Ioannis Saridakis, also known as Juan, chose this rocky outcrop to build his dream home. He envisioned a majestic tower, sturdy walls, and a vibrant ceramic facade, all designed to embrace the breathtaking views. He entrusted this vision to local architect Guillem Forteza Pinya, and together, they brought the Palau de Marivent to life in just two years. The regionalist modern architecture, complete with the imposing entrance and lush gardens, gave it a palatial air. Saridakis, a passionate art collector and patron, filled the Palau de Marivent with his treasured collection. It included over 1,300 pieces, boasting works by renowned artists from Sorolla and Rusiñol to Miró, Picasso, and even Delacroix. Upon his death in 1965, his widow, Anunciación Marconi, honored his wish. She gifted the Palau de Marivent to the local government, intending it to become a public museum. Imagine strolling through these halls, admiring masterpieces while the sea breeze drifted through the windows. However, fate had other plans for the Palau de Marivent. In 1973, it became the summer residence of Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sofia. Since then, the royal family has graced these halls, hosting illustrious guests and enjoying the tranquility of Mallorca. While the interior remains private, the gardens opened to the public in 2017. Explore the nine hectares of lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and geometrically shaped flowerbeds. Breathe in the scent of orange and lemon trees, and admire the collection of native Mediterranean plants. Among the foliage, discover twelve bronze sculptures by Joan Miró. These whimsical pieces add another layer of artistic heritage to the Palau de Marivent, reflecting Miró’s deep connection to Mallorca. So, as you stand before the Palau de Marivent, remember its multifaceted history. It’s a story of artistic passion, royal residence, and public garden, all interwoven to create the landmark you see today.
