Hidden in plain sight, the Palaisgarten whispers secrets of Dresden’s opulent past. The Palaisgarten isn’t just a green space. It’s a living tapestry woven with threads of history, art, and celebration. Initially designed in 1715 as a Baroque garden for Count Flemming, the Palaisgarten quickly transformed. It became a terraced spectacle for the wedding of Prince Friedrich August II. Imagine the scene: Marble sculptures by Balestra and Corradini adorned the terraces, sparkling under the Saxon sun. Corradini’s magnificent vases, later moved to the Großer Garten, once graced this very spot. Over time, the Palaisgarten shed its Baroque formality, evolving into a practical garden for the royal court. Two plane trees, planted around 1770-1780, still stand as silent witnesses to these changes. The 19th century brought another transformation, expanding the garden beyond the old city walls. Carl Adolph Terscheck reshaped it into a romantic English landscape garden, complete with meandering paths and carefully curated views. Even a section of the old Dresden ramparts remains, a hidden gem within this urban oasis. In the 1980s, the Palaisgarten underwent a significant restoration. Today, it hosts the striking marble sculpture “Sich befreien” (Liberating Oneself) by Charlotte Sommer-Landgraf. And every summer since 2011, the Palaissommer festival fills the air with music, cinema, and lively discussions. So, as you stroll through the Palaisgarten, remember its journey. From formal gardens to royal celebrations, from practical plots to artistic havens, the Palaisgarten reflects the ever-changing spirit of Dresden.
