Could a house cause someone to die of desire? The Palais Rose du Vésinet almost did. The Palais Rose du Vésinet, nestled in the charming town of Vésinet, stands as a testament to opulent tastes and dramatic lives. Built in 1899 for shipowner Arthur Schweitzer, its design echoes the grandeur of the Grand Trianon at Versailles. The Schweitzers, however, faced financial woes and the Palais Rose du Vésinet was auctioned off in 1906. Then entered the flamboyant poet Robert de Montesquiou. Upon seeing the Palais Rose du Vésinet in 1908, he dramatically declared he would die if he couldn’t have it. Luckily for him, he bought the Palais Rose du Vésinet and filled it with treasures and prominent guests like Claude Debussy and Colette. His lavish gatherings were legendary. Montesquiou’s “M” still adorns the grand salon fireplace, a reminder of his indelible mark on the house. After Montesquiou’s death, the equally dramatic Marquise Luisa Casati acquired the Palais Rose du Vésinet in 1923. Known for her eccentricities, she hosted parties illuminated by light bulbs strung around her neck and kept exotic snakes in the winter garden. Sadly, her extravagant lifestyle led to her financial ruin, and she lost the Palais Rose du Vésinet in 1934. It was later divided into lots, but thankfully much of its original splendor has been preserved. Even General de Gaulle briefly resided in the Ermitage, a separate building on the property, in 1940. A plaque commemorates this event. Today, the Palais Rose du Vésinet remains a private residence. It stands as a beautiful echo of a glamorous past, whispering tales of poets, marquises, and the enduring power of beauty.
