Right in front of you, stands the Palais Ludwig Ferdinand. You might not know it, but the building has a fascinating history. It was first built for Karl Anton Vogel, a gold and silver thread manufacturer. The architect Leo von Klenze lived in the palace for 25 years. So, the Palais Ludwig Ferdinand is where an important architect lived in the 19th century. But, the story doesn’t end there. You are facing what was originally the main facade. It was designed by Klenze with a projecting central bay and a balcony above the main entrance. The details echo his Bazar building across the Odeonsplatz. It’s remarkable how Klenze designed an ensemble with the Palais Leuchtenberg, which is just beside the Palais Ludwig Ferdinand, so that the buildings create a harmonious whole. They look almost identical. From 1878, the palace belonged to Princes Alfons and Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria. This is how the palace got its name. Ludwig Ferdinand had the facade on Wittelsbacherplatz embellished with arched doorways and a balcony. After the Second World War, the palace was badly damaged. In 1949, Siemens & Halske, a predecessor of Siemens AG, rented the building. In 1957, they bought the palace and it became Siemens’ headquarters. Today, this beautiful palace is home to a global company at the heart of Munich, a constant reminder of the city’s rich history.
