Justice’s imposing presence. That’s the Palais de Justice de Marseille. Its neoclassical grandeur dominates Place Montyon. This isn’t just any building. It’s a silent witness to centuries of Marseille’s legal history.

The Palais de Justice we see today wasn’t the first. The original stood in the old town on Place Daviel. That was between 1743 and 1747. It was deemed insufficient by the early 1800s. The need for a larger more modern courthouse was clear. Marseille was booming. Its port was a Mediterranean trade hub. The city’s growth demanded a grander symbol of justice.

In 1856 the decision was made. The new Palais de Justice would rise on Place Montyon. Architect Auguste Martin designed this neoclassical masterpiece. Construction lasted several years. Finally in 1862 it opened. The inauguration was a major event. Bishop Patrice Cruice celebrated mass. M Mourier the Imperial Procurer declared it open. Edouard Luce President of the Civil Tribunal presided.

The Palais de Justice is impressive. It’s 57 meters long and 54 meters high. The main facade faces Place Montyon. A monumental doorway leads to a peristyle of Ionic columns. Above it sits a representation of Justice. Guillaume sculpted this group. It shows Justice with Force defeating Crime. Prudence and Innocence are also represented. More sculptures adorn the building. Emile Aldebert sculpted Napoleonic armies and lions. Joseph Marius Ramus created the statues of Force and Prudence. Pierre Travaux sculpted figures representing the East and West sides.

Inside the main chamber is magnificent. Sixteen red Languedoc marble columns support a gallery. The archway features five coffers. Each larger coffer shows a legislator. The smaller ones depict legal figures of their time. Solon Justinian Charlemagne and Napoleon are represented. Their associated figures are also depicted. Francois Gilbert created this stunning archway decoration. Figures representing qualities needed by magistrates adorn the arches. Force equity reason rights liberty authority truth and eloquence are among them.

The Palais de Justice has seen renovations. It closed to the public in 2013. Operations moved temporarily. It reopened in 2015. It remains a vital center of Marseille’s judicial life. The Palais de Justice isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Marseille’s history and its enduring commitment to justice. It stands as a symbol of the city’s evolution. Its story continues unfolding within its walls.
