Have you ever wondered about a palace that housed emperors and then became a forgotten treasure? Welcome to the Palácio São Domingos. Right here before us stands a piece of Brazilian history. This magnificent building once served as a summer retreat for Emperor Dom Pedro I. He’d escape the pressures of court to enjoy the pleasant Niterói breezes. Imagine him strolling through these very grounds.

The Palácio São Domingos was initially more than just a summer home. It started life as the property of a wealthy slave trader known only as “O Cheira”. The original structure was actually a single-story building with a large courtyard perfect for housing carriages. But Dom Pedro I purchased it for a whopping 6000$000 Réis. He transformed it. His time here wasn’t lonely. He shared this lavish space with Dona Domitila de Castro the Marquise of Santos. They celebrated St John’s Eve together within these very walls in 1824.

After Dom Pedro I’s death the palace went to auction. It was bought by Honório Carneiro Leão who later became the Marquis of Paraná. It became the first property owned by the Province of Rio de Janeiro in 1835. It housed the Treasury and General Secretariat for decades. Even after the Republic was established the building continued its important role. It served as the seat of the state government until 1892. That year the Revolt of the Armada forced the capital’s move to Petrópolis.

The Palácio São Domingos is a remarkable structure. Its urban elegance is undeniable. It features two main buildings linked by a more recent central structure. The symmetrical design with its classic details is captivating. Each main building has eight windows per floor. There are large ground floor entrances and upper floor balconies with elegant balustrades. Notice the arches and stonework. The palace you see today is largely thanks to a major reconstruction in 1910. That was after a devastating fire destroyed some of the original structures.

Sadly the Palácio São Domingos now stands largely abandoned. Recent break-ins have caused significant damage. The building’s condition poses a danger. It’s a sad sight for a building that once shone so brightly. Its historical significance and visual richness should be preserved. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Brazil. It’s a reminder of the emperors’ grandeur and also a painful symbol of neglect. It’s a building deserving of restoration. It deserves to be remembered.
