Hidden behind these walls at Palácio Galveias lies a secret. It’s not a secret of hidden treasures or royal scandals. It’s the secret of a transformation, a rebirth. Palácio Galveias, once the grand residence of the Távora family in the 17th century, later belonging to the Counts of Galveias, faced a period of decline, becoming a dilapidated dwelling. But the city of Lisbon saw potential within these aging walls. In 1927, the idea of expropriating Palácio Galveias emerged, not for its land, but for the building itself. Initially intended to house courts and registries, the vision shifted. The palace was destined for a higher purpose, a haven for knowledge and culture. Between 1929 and 1931, Palácio Galveias underwent a significant transformation. While its exterior, except for the noble courtyard, remained largely untouched, the interior was reborn. The palace was meticulously restored, adorned with new paintings and decorations. The once-abandoned gardens were transformed into a tranquil park-museum. In 1931, Palácio Galveias reopened its doors, no longer as a nobleman’s residence, but as Lisbon’s new Central Library and Municipal Museum. This marked a new chapter in the palace’s history, a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing its future. More recently, in 2015, Palácio Galveias embarked on another journey of renewal. The library closed for 18 months to undergo a 2.5 million euro renovation. The aim was to create a 21st-century library while respecting its historic charm. The renovation expanded the library’s space significantly. The library reopened in 2017, boasting 220 additional seats, extended study rooms, a dedicated children’s area, versatile workspaces, and free internet access. Even a new lounge area was added, providing a comfortable space for visitors to relax. Palácio Galveias stands today as a vibrant hub for learning and community engagement. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine, a secret whispered through the ages, inviting you to step inside and discover its story.
