The Palacio de Cristal, also known as Itchimbia Cultural Center, sits atop Itchimbía Hill, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view of Quito. This magnificent glass and steel structure wasn’t always here. It began its life far across the ocean, in Belgium, constructed in 1899. General Eloy Alfaro commissioned it, envisioning a grand market for Quito, similar to Les Halles in Paris. The structure was shipped to Guayaquil, then transported piece by piece over the Andes on the backs of mules, a journey that speaks volumes about the ambition of the project. Initially, the structure served as the Mercado de Santa Clara, located near the Santa Clara Monastery. In the late 1990s, as part of a revitalization project, the city decided to give this architectural gem a new home. The Palacio de Cristal was painstakingly dismantled, restored, and resurrected on Itchimbía Hill, becoming the cultural center we admire today. The Palacio de Cristal now houses a vibrant cultural hub within its glass walls. The main room spans an impressive 1,300 square meters, hosting exhibitions, conferences, and artistic events. Advanced technology, including robotic lights and a state-of-the-art sound system, enhances every event. The surrounding park, once a place of indigenous worship and later a training ground for the military, now provides a tranquil escape.
