Ever wonder why the French flag flies so proudly here in Montevideo? This is the Palacio Buxareo. It is more than just a beautiful building. It is a piece of Uruguayan history with a French heart.

The Palacio Buxareo stands at the corner of Avenida Uruguay and Andes. It serves as the official residence of the French Ambassador in Uruguay. But its story begins long before France called it home.

Imagine Montevideo in 1884. Félx Buxareo a prominent politician and his wife Sofia Jackson wanted a grand residence. They commissioned the talented engineer Luigi Andreoni to design their dream home. Andreoni also designed the Club Uruguay. He designed the Hospital Italiano and the Estación Central de trenes José Artigas.

The result was Palacio Buxareo a stunning palace. It reflected European architectural styles. The Buxareo family enjoyed their home for a short time. After their deaths, the Archdiocese of Montevideo acquired the palace.

In 1902, Palacio Buxareo became the official residence of the Archbishop of Montevideo. Monsignor Mariano Soler lived here. The ground floor housed the administrative offices of the Church Curia. For almost two decades, the palace served the Catholic Church.

A significant change occurred in 1921. The French State purchased Palacio Buxareo. It transformed the building into the French Embassy in Uruguay. Since 1922, it has been a symbol of the strong ties between France and Uruguay.

The Palacio Buxareo has witnessed many important events. In 1984 architects Carré and Gardelle adapted the building for the French Legation offices. It has also hosted presidential visits and cultural exchanges. Charles De Gaulle visited Uruguay. Many Uruguayan presidents have traveled to France.

The building has undergone maintenance and restoration over the years. Sculptor Luis Alonzo worked on it in the 1980s. Today, the French government works hard to preserve this historic building.

The Palacio Buxareo also participates in Uruguay’s annual Heritage Days. The public can explore its rooms and learn about Franco-Uruguayan relations. The Ambassador’s office is open. Explanatory panels and QR codes provide more information.
