Before us stands the Palácio Benagazil a testament to time and transformation. Originally a country estate it belonged to Policarpo José Machado the first Viscount of Benagazil. He built it as a leisure home a place of relaxation amidst the Lisbon countryside.

The Palácio Benagazil is more than just a building. It represents a piece of Lisbon’s history. It survived the upheaval caused by the construction of Lisbon Airport in 1942. The surrounding agricultural land was expropriated. Many buildings were torn down to make way for the airport’s infrastructure. The Palácio Benagazil however remained.

Imagine the life of the Viscount. He oversaw his estate’s production. He likely enjoyed the quiet country life. Then came the airport’s construction. This must have dramatically changed his tranquil surroundings. The palace was used by TAP the airline for their daycare and club. Later the Lisbon City Council’s Museums and Palaces division occupied it.

The Palácio Benagazil’s architecture reflects its past. It’s a two-story L-shaped building with a four-slope roof typical of the late 18th century. The main facade features three balcony windows with elaborately carved stone surrounds. Above the central window sits the Machado family coat of arms. The interior boasts an original stone staircase and beautifully preserved 18th-century blue-and-white tilework.

The palace’s history isn’t solely confined to the main structure. The estate also included a caretaker’s house support pavilions and a guardhouse. A beautiful garden once existed behind the palace. Today a new building extends from the palace. It houses CONFAGRI a modern addition to the historical heart of the Palácio Benagazil.

The Palácio Benagazil has witnessed immense change. From a peaceful country retreat to its current function as CONFAGRI’s headquarters. It is a reminder of Lisbon’s evolution and the endurance of its historic buildings. The story of the Palácio Benagazil is a captivating one of resilience adaptation and enduring presence in a city constantly in motion. It stands as a testament to the layers of history embedded within Lisbon’s urban fabric.
