Picture the Palacete Porto Covo before you. Its elegant facade whispers tales of a bygone era. This isn’t just any building. This is the Palacete Porto Covo a testament to Lisbon’s rich history. Built in the last quarter of the 18th century it seamlessly blends late Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Jacinto Fernandes Bandeira a wealthy merchant commissioned its construction. He held powerful contracts including those for Brazilian whale oil and Brazilwood. The architect Joaquim de Oliveira is believed to have designed this masterpiece.

The Palacete Porto Covo stands proudly on Rua de Sao Domingos. Its main facade faces southeast. It’s nestled between a residential building and a chapel now detached. The palace is more than just a pretty face. Its interior layout has remained remarkably consistent throughout the years. It showcases a truly grand and coherent spatial program.

Step inside and imagine yourself walking the grand staircase. This is a true “royal staircase” as described in historic accounts. It features a wide central flight leading to an intermediate landing. From there two parallel flights ascend to the main floor. The main floor boasts a long distribution corridor. This connects the magnificent rooms and the main staircase. But there is more. There were three staircases originally. A main one for state occasions a private one for the family and a service staircase. The private staircase connected to a now-closed passage leading to the adjacent chapel.

Notice the symmetrical facade. Its horizontal lines are accentuated by a separating frieze between the ground and main floors. The symmetry is broken only by a small towered body on the left and four dormer windows. Look at the central section. Note the triangular pediment above the main entrance. It’s flanked by pilasters.

Now gaze at the rear facade overlooking the garden. This is different. It has a vertical development. This contrasts with the main facade. The three distinct floors are clearly marked. The central section is highlighted by a vertical rhythm of windows separated by pilasters. The garden facade also reveals more of the palace’s U-shape design.

The palace’s interior is lavish. It features stunning tilework and neoclassical paintings adorning walls and ceilings. The ground floor was for service areas and private quarters. The main floor was for formal entertaining and private family spaces. The second floor likely held private family rooms. In 1793 the palace was illuminated and decorated to celebrate the birth of a princess.

In the 20th century the Palacete Porto Covo became the British Embassy in Lisbon. Later it was acquired by the Lusitania Insurance Company. This building serves as a reminder of Lisbon’s enduring elegance and its fascinating past. The Palacete Porto Covo stands as a symbol of resilience and refined taste a true gem in the heart of Lisbon.
