Did you ever hear of a jewel thief who became a real estate mogul? Our story begins with José Pinto Leitão, a renowned Lisbon jeweler in the early 1900s. Mr. Leitão, having amassed a fortune, decided to build a palace. This palace, the Palacete Leitão, stands before us today. He commissioned the Italian architect Nicola Bigaglia, who had made Portugal his home, to design his dream residence. The year was 1904, and the Palacete Leitão began to rise, a testament to Leitão’s success. Bigaglia crafted a magnificent structure, complete with a vast 7,200 square meter garden surrounding the 3,500 square meter palace. Inside, artist J. Ribeiro Júnior added his touch with stunning paintings in 1921. Ricardo Leone, a key figure in reviving Portugal’s stained-glass art, created a breathtaking window in 1920. For many years, the Palacete Leitão housed the health services of SAMS, the Medical-Social Assistance Service of the Bank Workers’ Union of the South and Islands. Later, the palacete went on the market for a staggering 18 million euros. Then, in 2020, a new chapter began for the Palacete Leitão. The Ismaili Imamat, led by Prince Aga Khan, purchased the property for 13.5 million euros. This purchase wasn’t just any real estate deal. It was part of a larger vision. The Aga Khan Development Network, known for its global social development projects, already owned the neighboring Henrique Mendonça Palace. They planned to make it their world headquarters. The Palacete Leitão became an extension of this vision, housing additional services and agencies. This acquisition also cemented the Ismaili Imamat’s growing presence in Portugal, home to a significant Ismaili community of around 10,000 people. So, as you gaze at the Palacete Leitão, remember its journey. From a jeweler’s dream to a union’s health center and now a part of a global network, the Palacete Leitão has witnessed Lisbon’s ever-changing story.
