Beneath its classical facade lies a tale of medical prowess and noble titles. You are standing before the Palacete do Visconde de Santo Ambrósio. This 19th-century mansion whispers stories of a Lisbon long past. It stands on the site of the former parish of Santa Isabel in Campo de Ourique.

The Palacete do Visconde de Santo Ambrósio belonged to Dr. Francisco António Namorado. He was the Visconde de Santo Ambrósio. More impressively he served as physician to King Luís.

The Visconde’s titles came from his address. He resided on Rua de Santo Ambrósio. Today this street is known as Rua D. Dinis. The house existed before 1856. It appears in Filipe Folque’s Lisbon plan with its current layout.

Note the building’s irregular pentagonal shape. This is best viewed from the corner where Rua D. Dinis meets Rua do Sol ao Rato. Here a courtyard greets visitors. Stone pillars topped with vases flank the entrance gate.

The main facade faces east. A continuous balcony runs above an arched gallery. This gallery is supported by pillars. It creates a sheltered entrance. The ground floor features a central doorway. Five windows adorn the upper floor. A balustrade with decorated plinths hides the roof.

Look at the details of the facade. Notice the ground floor windows with straight lintels. The upper floor windows have curved tops. These are adorned with metal railings. The building culminates in a cornice. Above it a balustrade adds to the Palacete do Visconde de Santo Ambrósio’s grandeur.

The building has seen many changes over the years. Leonel Marques Leal Pancada acquired the property between 1926 and 1928. Later Júlia Barradas and Dr. Amilcar Cortez Pinto owned it. Dr. Asdrúbal Cortez Pinto interrupted his career in the United States to live here. He lived here with his mother in the 1940s.

The Central Association of Portuguese Agriculture owned the building from 1947 to 1970. Manuel Faria purchased it from the association in 2001. He paid approximately one million euros.

Inside mixed masonry painted plasterwork and limestone are used. Stucco, wrought and cast iron wood and glass complete the look.

Various repairs and renovations have been carried out. These include roof repairs interior and exterior cleanings and shopfront alterations.
