Can you feel the weight of centuries pressing down on us here at the Palais de Justice? This isn’t just a building. It’s a living, breathing chronicle of Paris, a place where Roman governors, French kings, and revolutionary tribunals have all held sway. The Palais de Justice, aptly named, continues to dispense justice to this day. Its roots go deep, all the way back to the Roman period when the governor’s palace stood on this very island, the Île de la Cité. Clovis, King of the Franks, also called this ancient Roman fortress home. Later, the Capetian kings returned Paris to its former glory, expanding the palace to reflect their growing power. By the 14th century, the Palais de la Cité was one of Europe’s grandest. It even housed the prized holy relics of Saint Louis IX in the breathtaking Sainte-Chapelle. Eventually, the monarchs moved on, leaving the Palais to the courts and official receptions. It became the Palais de Justice, the seat of justice. This very spot, the Cour du Mai, witnessed a dramatic scene over two centuries ago. Imagine the courtyard in the early morning. Jeanne de La Motte-Valois, the mastermind behind a notorious jewel heist, is dragged from the Conciergerie prison. Accused of convincing Cardinal de Rohan he was buying a diamond necklace for Marie Antoinette, Jeanne was put on trial here in the Palais de Justice. She was interrogated, convicted, and brought back to the Cour du Mai for her punishment: flogging, branding, and life imprisonment. She fought, she was whipped, and when the hot iron branded a “V” for “voleuse” (thief) onto her breast, she bit one of her executioners before fainting. The Palais de Justice has held many famous prisoners within its walls. The Conciergerie, the prison attached to the palace, became known as the “waiting room of the Revolution.” Marie Antoinette herself was held here, perpetually watched by guards, before her execution. The Grand’Salle, an impressive medieval hall, once served as a dining area for the king’s servants. Above it was the Grand’Chambre where the king entertained. Later, it became the Revolutionary Court, the very place that sent so many to the guillotine. Today, the upper chambers, destroyed by fire in the 19th century, belong to the Palais de Justice. Within the Conciergerie, you can see lists of those who lost their lives during the Revolution, including Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and Robespierre. A reconstructed cell shows the conditions Marie Antoinette endured. Nearby, the women’s courtyard offered a brief respite for prisoners. The Palais de Justice, with its complex history and grand architecture, continues to serve as a powerful symbol of French justice.
