The Palace of Holyroodhouse, a majestic edifice that dominates the eastern end of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, is a time capsule of royal history. It’s the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. The Palace’s history goes back to the 12th century when King David I founded an Augustinian abbey here. The abbey, named Holyrood for the Holy Cross (Holy Rood), was a place of religious devotion and pilgrimage. Over time, the abbey guesthouse became a more comfortable royal home than Edinburgh Castle. In the early 16th century, King James IV started building a new palace, cementing the link between the royal family and Holyroodhouse. The Palace of Holyroodhouse is more than brick and mortar, it’s a stage where dramas of power, love, and tragedy unfolded. The most celebrated resident was Mary, Queen of Scots. In the 1560s she made the Palace her main residence. Sadly, it is here that she witnessed the murder of her private secretary, David Rizzio. This happened during one of Mary’s several marriages. Both her marriage to Lord Darnley and to the Earl of Bothwell took place in the abbey. But the story of the Palace doesn’t end with Mary, Queen of Scots. The palace was rebuilt in a French chateau style for Charles II in the 1670s. And after that, it was modernized by King George V in the 20th century making it equipped with central heating, electricity, bathrooms and elevators. Queen Elizabeth II spent a week each summer at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Standing in front of the Palace, it’s impossible to imagine the rich tapestry of history woven into its very walls.
