In 1965, Pakuranga Plaza first opened its doors as Pakuranga Town Centre. Imagine a time before sprawling malls, when this area was a hub of new development. Pakuranga Plaza became one of New Zealand’s earliest shopping malls. It featured anchor stores like Farmers and George Court. The Plaza has undergone numerous transformations since then. Little remains of its original 1960s open-air design. Pakuranga Plaza has adapted to the changing times, evolving to meet the community’s needs. In 2008, retail experts rated Pakuranga Plaza three out of four stars. This rating considered factors like shopping area, economic performance, and future growth potential. The Plaza held its own, despite competition from newer malls like Botany Town Centre and Sylvia Park. Pakuranga Plaza continued to evolve. In 2012, the mall was sold and renamed. It transitioned from Westfield Pakuranga to its current name, marking a new chapter in its story. The sale to GYP Properties in 2014 further solidified its place in the community. Today, Pakuranga Plaza boasts over 80 stores, including major retailers like Woolworths and The Warehouse. While The Warehouse stands externally, it remains a key part of the Plaza’s retail landscape. The future holds exciting developments for Pakuranga Plaza. A busway station is planned as part of the Eastern Busway project. This will connect the Plaza to Botany Town Centre and Panmure railway station, enhancing its accessibility and further solidifying its role as a vital hub in East Auckland.
