Over 1000 students once filled Pakuranga Intermediate’s classrooms. That’s a lot of kids. Can you imagine?

Pakuranga Intermediate opened its doors in 1973. It was a much-needed addition to the growing Pakuranga suburb. Before its arrival students had to travel far to Howick School. This made Pakuranga Intermediate a welcome solution.

The school started with 605 students. Sixteen classrooms housed them. Five specialty rooms were added. Class sizes were huge over 35 students per room. The student population later swelled to over 1000. Another intermediate school was built nearby to ease the pressure.

Today Pakuranga Intermediate boasts a vibrant multicultural community. Students represent 47 nationalities. Fourteen different languages are spoken. The staff share this diversity.

Pakuranga Intermediate plays a significant role in the wider community. It hosts the RTLB service. This supports 44 schools in the area. The school has a special place in many hearts. Its founding principal’s philosophies still resonate today. Many founding students and staff are still involved. They share their memories and experiences.

The school’s 50th jubilee celebration is a chance to look back. It’s a time to celebrate diversity education and community. The event spans two days. Many original philosophies and beliefs are on display.
