Lost in the embrace of the Hauraki Gulf stands Pakihi Point a rugged cape whispering tales of the past. Pakihi Point isn’t just a geographical feature. It’s a silent observer of centuries of history.

From this very spot you can almost feel the echoes of 1894. That’s when the McCallum family acquired Pakihi Point’s neighbouring island. They purchased it from the legendary Sir John Logan Campbell a name synonymous with early Auckland development. The purchase included the much smaller Karamuramu Island.

But Pakihi Point’s story doesn’t end there. The McCallum brothers embarked on an ambitious venture. They quarried red chert. This red chert was crucial. It was used extensively in constructing many buildings in Auckland’s burgeoning cityscape. The brothers’ enterprise spanned from 1906 to 1927. Think of the many structures around you. Many likely contain this very stone quarried from near Pakihi Point.

Their resourcefulness extended beyond quarrying. To facilitate their operations they cleverly sunk the Rotomahana. This was the first iron ship constructed in Auckland. They converted it into a wharf a testament to their innovative spirit and resourcefulness. The Rotomahana served as an innovative temporary wharf a truly remarkable feat of engineering.

Today Pakihi Point might appear peaceful. Yet it holds within its soil the legacy of hard work innovation and resourcefulness. The red chert from this area shaped Auckland’s very fabric. It’s a poignant reminder that history is not just found in grand buildings but also in the unassuming points of land that quietly witnessed it all. Pakihi Point reminds us to look beneath the surface to discover hidden stories that enrich our understanding of the places we visit.
