A colossal concrete wave. That’s the Paketposthalle. This isn’t just any building. This is a 19,000 square meter landmark. A behemoth of architecture from the 1960s. The Paketposthalle. It stands before you a testament to mid-century engineering.

The Paketposthalle was more than just a post office. It was a vital artery for Munich. A place where letters and parcels flowed. Connecting people and businesses across Germany. Now it stands ready for a new chapter.

Herzog & de Meuron architects have a bold vision. They plan to transform the Paketposthalle. They see it as the heart of a new urban quarter. A vibrant hub for culture social activity and living. Imagine a bustling mixed-use neighbourhood. Apartments shops and cultural spaces. All centered around this magnificent hall.

But the change won’t happen overnight. The Paketposthalle will continue postal operations until around 2023. Then the transformation will begin. Two 155-meter towers will rise alongside it. Their design inspired by the hall’s sweeping roofline. They will create a striking skyline landmark.

Surrounding the hall will be six-story courtyard buildings. These will house apartments and businesses. They’ll create a dense urban texture. A contrast to the grandeur of the Paketposthalle. This new district aims for a balance. A blend of modern urban life and historical preservation.

Jacques Herzog of Herzog & de Meuron spoke of this project. He called the Paketposthalle “an extraordinary example of engineering”. He envisions it as “a place of culture and encounter”. A space that will welcome both locals and visitors.

The Paketposthalle is more than a building. It’s a symbol. A symbol of Munich’s past. And a glimpse into its exciting future. It represents the transformation of a city. A city that embraces its history while looking toward tomorrow. So let’s step closer and fully take in the magnificent Paketposthalle. Let’s witness the dawn of a new era.
