Slithering through the heart of Bali, the Pakerisan River whispers tales of ancient kingdoms and forgotten shrines. The Pakerisan River isn’t just a river. It’s a time capsule, carrying the echoes of monks, seers, and “rishis” who journeyed from India, drawn by a mysterious light. They built temples and shrines along the Pakerisan River, in places brimming with natural energy. Some, like the magnificent Tampaksiring complex and the famed Gua Gajah (Elephant Cave), still draw visitors from around the globe. Others lie hidden, known only to locals and archaeologists. These archaeological treasures, scattered along the Pakerisan River’s banks, still hum with a mystic energy. Many of the earliest shrines along the Pakerisan River are Buddhist, a testament to Buddhism’s arrival in Indonesia before Hinduism. The Pakerisan River area holds a UNESCO World Heritage designation, encompassing eight significant sites. Among them are Pura Tirta Empul, Bali’s most sacred spring, Goa Gajah, and Pegulingan Temple. Lesser known is Pura Pengukur-ukuran, the “Temple of the Giants,” a truly enigmatic place. Another hidden gem along the Pakerisan River is Gua Garba, where only the facade and meditation caves remain. A newer temple has risen behind it, but the spirit of meditation still lingers in the air. Inscriptions suggest Gua Garba was built around the 12th century AD during King Jayapangus’s reign, though some believe it to be an 11th-century relic. The giant stone staircase leading to the entrance seems fit for a mythical being. The Pakerisan River also flows by Candi Tebing, a smaller version of Gunung Kawi temple, where a single candi is carved into the rock face. The surrounding forest, the songs of birds, and a holy spring create an aura of mystery. North along the Pakerisan River lies Tirta Empul. Like many Balinese temples, it’s designed in three mandalas, representing heaven, the human world, and the environment. A walk through paddy fields from the Pakerisan River leads to Pura Pegulingan. Here, Hindu and Buddhist iconography intertwine, honoring Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, and Mahadeva (the Balinese name for Buddha). Sadly, the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung destroyed much of the Buddhist sections along the lower Pakerisan River banks. Hidden beneath a carved stone staircase along the Pakerisan River is Gunung Kawi Temple, with its royal tombs carved from solid rock. The river flows through the heart of the complex, again highlighting the sacredness of water in Balinese culture. The Pakerisan River area offers a journey through time, a blend of nature, history, and spirituality. Remember to approach these sites with respect, bringing a sarong and a contemplative spirit.
