Amidst the gentle slopes of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, a vibrant tapestry of colors and culture unfolds at the Pagode Thiền Minh. This Buddhist temple, the largest in the region, stands as a testament to the resilience and devotion of the Vietnamese community. The Pagode Thiền Minh’s story began in 1982. A small group of Vietnamese Buddhists, led by Cao Van Truong, sought to create a spiritual haven in their new home. Their journey started in a modest apartment in Vénissieux, then moved to a rented house in Villeurbanne. This house was inaugurated as the Pagode Thiền Minh in 1982. But the community dreamt bigger. In 1982, they purchased land in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, a tranquil hilltop setting that would become the temple’s permanent home. The construction of the Pagode Thiền Minh was a labor of love, spanning from 1984 to 1990. The community rallied together, their donations and volunteer efforts transforming the hillside. In the autumn of 1984, a symbolic moment occurred. The Buddha statue from their temporary location in Villeurbanne was transferred to the new site. The Pagode Thiền Minh continued to grow. A generous gift from a Thai family brought a magnificent 2.20-meter bronze Buddha statue, covered in gold leaf. The official inauguration took place in May 1990, a landmark event marked by the ordination of young monks. Tragedy struck in 2006 when a fire ravaged the Pagode Thiền Minh, destroying the roof. Undeterred, the community launched a reconstruction effort. The new Pagode Thiền Minh rose from the ashes, even more vibrant than before. Today, the Pagode Thiền Minh stands as a beacon of peace and spirituality. Its ornate architecture, colorful frescoes depicting Buddha’s life, and serene gardens offer a glimpse into Vietnamese Buddhist traditions. The Pagode Thiền Minh also serves as a vital cultural center for the Vietnamese community. It hosts numerous events throughout the year, including the Lunar New Year celebrations, Vesak (Buddha’s birthday), and Vu Lan (ancestor appreciation). The Pagode Thiền Minh’s story is one of resilience, faith, and community. It’s a story that continues to unfold, enriching the cultural landscape of Lyon.
