Ever glimpsed the cosmos from your own backyard? At the PAGASA Planetarium, you can. Right here in Quezon City, nestled within the PAGASA Science Garden on Agham Road, the PAGASA Planetarium has been opening windows to the universe since September 1977. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) built and operates this celestial gateway. Originally equipped with seating for 100 eager stargazers, the PAGASA Planetarium has seen its share of upgrades. Minor renovations in 2005 refreshed the seating, ensuring comfort during cosmic journeys. A major renovation in 2024, under Administrator Nathaniel Servando, transformed the space. Now a 90-seater haven, the planetarium is adorned with captivating astronomical imagery. Think supernovae, the sun’s life cycle, and a visual dance of astronomical seasons. These vibrant displays enhance the educational shows and lectures hosted within its walls, including events like National Astronomy Week and the 100 Hours of Astronomy. But the PAGASA Planetarium’s reach extends beyond these walls. In 1999, a mobile planetarium joined the mission. With a capacity of 50, this portable cosmos brings the wonders of the universe to communities outside Manila. Imagine exploring distant galaxies and nebulas, all from a location of your choosing. This dedication to outreach underscores PAGASA’s commitment to making astronomy accessible to everyone. So next time you’re looking for a celestial escape, remember the PAGASA Planetarium. It’s more than a building; it’s a portal to the infinite, sparking curiosity and wonder about the universe we inhabit.
