Padraic Pearse was born in Dublin in 1879. His father was English. He worked as a sculptor. His mother’s family hailed from County Meath. They were native Irish speakers. This instilled in him a love for Irish language and culture. Pearse joined the Gaelic League at age 16. By 23 he became editor of its newspaper. It was a bilingual school for boys. His brother Willie also shared this belief. Pearse sought an idyllic setting for his school. He found it at The Hermitage in Rathfarnham. Today it is the Pearse Museum. He also helped found St Ita’s School for girls. It shared the aims of St Enda’s.

In 1913 Pearse joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood. It was a secret organization. Its goal was to overthrow British rule. He became Director of Military Organization for the Irish Volunteers in 1914. Pearse was instrumental in steering the Volunteers towards rebellion.

In 1915 Pearse delivered a stirring oration at Fenian Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral. He declared that Ireland unfree would never be at peace. These words ignited nationalist sentiment. They propelled Ireland toward the Easter Rising.

Pearse ordered Volunteer units to begin maneuvers on Easter Sunday 1916. This signaled the start of the Easter Rising. He read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside the General Post Office. Pearse was the primary author. He was declared President of the Republic. After six days of intense fighting Pearse ordered a surrender. He aimed to prevent further civilian deaths.

The British military court-martialed Pearse. He was executed by firing squad on May 3 1916. He was just 36 years old. His actions and death cemented his place as a symbol of Irish freedom.

Pearse’s legacy lives on. Many places in Ireland bear his name. Pearse Street in Dublin was renamed in his honor. Numerous sports clubs commemorate him. His writings continue to inspire. They include poems like “The Mother” and “The Fool”.
