Did you know that the Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe started as a small teacher training facility in 1757? Today we stand before an institution with a rich history dating back centuries. The Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe has evolved into a modern university.

The Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe officially became a university in 1962. However its roots go much deeper. It began as the Schulseminar. This seminary was the first state-run teacher training center in Baden.

Initially the seminary only accepted Protestant candidates. It opened on November 4 1768. The location of the teacher training center changed several times. From 1823 to 1830 it was located in Markgrafenstraße 48. Later from 1830 to 1870 it moved to a building near the Botanical Garden. Finally in 1870 it settled in Bismarckstraße 10.

Interest in teacher training grew. Therefore a second teacher training center opened in 1875. It was located in Rüppurrer Straße 29. This one was for Catholic teacher candidates. Baden’s first state teacher training seminary for women opened in 1878. It was located in Sophienstraße 31/33 near the Karlstor.

In 1926 all three seminaries merged. They formed the new Lehrerbildungsanstalt Karlsruhe. This institution underwent several transformations. It became the Hochschule für Lehrerbildung from 1936 to 1942. Then it was the Pädagogische Institut from 1952 to 1962. Finally on May 29 1962 it emerged as the Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe.

Today the Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe holds the status of a scientific university. It gained the right to award doctorates in 1987. It also gained the right to grant habilitations in 2005.

The Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe maintains international relations. It is also known as the University of Education. The Pädagogische Hochschule Karlsruhe focuses on educational processes. These processes occur in social cultural and institutional contexts.

The campus is near the center of Karlsruhe. There are three buildings on the main campus. Another building is near the Cooperative State University Karlsruhe.
