Question: Ever wonder where nobility meets responsibility in Manila? That place is Paco Catholic School. It stands as a beacon of education and service.

Paco Catholic School began humbly. It started in November 1912. A small class of 50 boys met inside a chapel. This chapel was in the Peñafancia section of Paco. Raymond Esquinet a CICM father, initiated this educational endeavor.

The school’s early days saw it move to a wooden structure. This was on Trece de Agosto Street. Today Paco Catholic School is the largest parochial school in the Philippines. It serves around 5000 students.

Godofredo Aldenhuijsen succeeded Esquinet. He continued to grow Paco Catholic School. In June 1913, Aldenhuijsen sought help from the Belgian Mothers of St. Theresa’s College. Enrollment increased steadily. By 1916, the grade school received full government recognition.

During Aldenhuijsen’s time, Paco Catholic School expanded further. A wooden building with five rooms was built along Trece de Agosto Street. In 1933, the Intermediate level gained government recognition. A three-story building followed soon after. The first high school class began. Paco Catholic School received full recognition for its secondary courses in 1938.

World War II disrupted operations. The school closed in 1941. However, the Archbishop of Manila insisted on reopening the high school in 1942. Despite further closures due to battles, Paco Catholic School persevered. Classes resumed in July 1945 with 1600 students.

The CICM Fathers and Belgian Mothers continued their administration. By 1964, the student population reached 7000. In 1984, after 72 years of service, the CICM turned over management to the Archdiocese of Manila.

Under the Archdiocese, Paco Catholic School continued to evolve. New buildings were constructed. Kindergarten and Nursery levels were introduced. The school embraced changes in the educational system. It integrated the K to 12 curriculum.

Paco Catholic School celebrated its centennial in 2012. Msgr Rolando Dela Cruz highlighted the school’s growth from a small chapel to a large campus. He emphasized the embodiment of true Paconians in their vision and values.

In April 2024, a fire caused damage to some buildings. Yet, the school’s spirit remained unbroken.

Today, Paco Catholic School stands tall. It is a testament to its rich history and commitment to education. Its motto “Noblesse Oblige” guides its students. It reminds them that with great dignity comes great responsibility. Paco Catholic School continues to shape future leaders. It inspires them to serve their community and the world.
