“Did the Packhalle X always hum with this quiet industry?” a visitor whispers, captivated by the scene. The Packhalle X in Bremerhaven isn’t just a building. It’s a monument to a bygone era. It’s the backbone of this historic Fischereihafen, a testament to Bremerhaven’s rich maritime history. The Packhalle X, built between 1928 and 1929, was designed by Emil Vogel and Karl Zeh. The Prussian state built it, along with many others, for private fish distributors. These distributors could lease sections within these cavernous halls. Imagine the hustle and bustle as fishmongers prepared their wares. The Fischereihafenbetriebsgenossenschaft, an association of merchants and ship owners who also ran the auctions, managed the Packhalle X. This setup was ingenious. The state received not only rent for the building and land but also shares of the revenue. This revenue helped maintain the port facilities. They also received a portion of the auction fees and the cooperative’s net profit, ensuring the port thrived. Packhalle X stands out among its peers. While many pack halls are similar, with a loading ramp on one side, offices above, and commercial spaces at the back, the Packhalle X is unique. It also served as an auction hall, amplifying its importance within the Fischereihafen. It’s a central structure, embodying the expansion that Bremerhaven underwent in the interwar period. In 1920, the Prussian Landtag approved massive construction costs for this project. The port had reached its capacity. There weren’t enough quays for landing fish. The booming fish industry desperately needed additional commercial space. The expansion of the Fischereihafen, costing 32.7 million marks, was one of Prussia’s most significant port construction projects at the time. It was comparable to the Columbuskaje and Nordschleuse in Bremerhaven’s Überseehafen. Today, of the original fifteen pack halls, only eight remain, including Packhalle X.
