What secrets does the Pacific Tower hold? We’re about to uncover them. The Pacific Tower stands tall, a sentinel overlooking Seattle. This majestic Art Deco masterpiece has witnessed a fascinating evolution. It began its life in 1933. It was known then as the U.S. Marine Hospital. The Pacific Tower offered 312 beds to veterans, merchant seamen, and the Coast Guard. It also served those less fortunate, the poor and indigent. In 1951, the Pacific Tower transitioned into a Public Health Service Hospital. A few years later, an annex expanded its capacity. It provided outpatient services. By 1981, the federal government ceased operations. The city of Seattle took control, chartering the Pacific Hospital Preservation and Development Authority (PHPDA). This marked a shift towards office use. But the Pacific Tower wouldn’t abandon its medical roots. The lower floors continued as a medical center. Amazon even called the Pacific Tower home from 1999 to 2010. Now, state agencies and Seattle Central College’s healthcare training program fill many of its floors. The Pacific Tower is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Seattle’s resilience. In the 1990s, it underwent seismic retrofitting. Yet the 2001 Nisqually earthquake still caused significant damage. But the city restored it, preserving its iconic presence. Even today, the Pacific Tower continues to evolve. New affordable housing units are being added. This ensures its continued relevance in the Seattle landscape. Look closely at the Pacific Tower. Notice the intricate details, the brick patterns, the terracotta ornaments. They whisper stories of the past. They also speak to a future filled with promise. The Pacific Tower is a testament to Seattle’s spirit. It’s a place where history and progress intertwine.
