Since the 1960s, this unassuming building on Anglesea Street, also known as the PGM Centre, has served as a vibrant hub for Pacific communities across Auckland. The Pacific Gospel Mission Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the power of community and the spirit of giving. The original church building dates back to the early 1980s. Imagine the countless gatherings, the hymns sung, the prayers whispered within these walls over the years. The PGM Centre hosts a wide array of activities, from traditional church services to lively hip-hop sessions and graceful line dancing. The air here vibrates with the rhythm of Pacific life, from the joyful sounds of fale-style camp weekends to the quiet concentration of tivaevae quilt-making groups. The Pacific Gospel Mission Church embodies a deep-rooted philanthropic spirit. A “mealofa,” or koha, a traditional offering, is invited from the various groups that utilize the building, fostering a culture of shared responsibility and mutual support. A few years ago, the roof over the main hall, the heart of the PGM Centre, began to show its age. The Pacific Gospel Mission Trust, dedicated to maintaining this vital community space, turned to Foundation North for assistance. With their support, the roof was replaced, ensuring a healthier and more comfortable environment for everyone who gathers here. This act of generosity has allowed even more community and church groups to enjoy the Pacific Gospel Mission Church throughout the year, strengthening the bonds of community and encouraging collaboration. The revitalized PGM Centre stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Pacific Gospel Mission Church. It’s a place where communities come together to practice their faith, hold meetings (fono), sing, worship (lotu), laugh, sew, dance, share stories (talanoa), eat, play, and simply connect with one another.
