Can a park transport you to a magical land? Oz Park in Chicago can. This isn’t Kansas, folks, but it’s the next best thing. Oz Park, nestled in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, is a whimsical tribute to L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” The park is located at 2021 North Burling Street, right at the corner of Lincoln and Webster. It’s just a stone’s throw away from the bustling intersection of Lincoln, Halsted, and Fullerton.

Oz Park officially opened in 1976. It’s named in honor of L. Frank Baum, the Chicago reporter who penned the beloved children’s classic. Baum lived in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood during the 1890s. The park is more than just a patch of green. It’s a vibrant testament to Baum’s enduring legacy.

The park has become a local hub, complete with a walking/biking trail, a playground, and a themed garden. The trail winds through the park for 0.61 miles. The Emerald Garden beckons visitors with a vibrant display of colorful flowers. Children can let their imaginations soar at Dorothy’s Playlot. It’s a playground filled with swings and climbing equipment, perfect for little adventurers.

Oz Park also boasts a unique collection of sculptures. Created by artist John Kearney, these statues capture the magic of Oz. The Tin Man, fashioned from old automobile parts, greets visitors near the intersection of Lincoln, Webster, and Larrabee. Nearby stands the Scarecrow, a bronze figure that seems ready to share its limited wisdom. The Cowardly Lion, also cast in bronze, can be found near the intersection of Larrabee and Dickens. Finally, Dorothy and her faithful companion Toto stand near Dorothy’s Playlot, ready to embark on a new adventure. These sculptures aren’t just art. They’re a tangible connection to the beloved characters of Oz. They invite visitors to step into the story and experience the magic firsthand.

Oz Park offers more than just themed attractions. It also features Melamerson Athletic Field, named after Dorothy Melamerson, a retired Chicago gym teacher. This field provides space for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The park is a testament to community spirit and collaboration. The Oz Park Advisory Council, a group of local volunteers, has been instrumental in fundraising and maintaining the park’s unique features. Their efforts have transformed Oz Park into a treasured community space. So, the next time you’re in Chicago, make sure to visit Oz Park. It’s a place where imagination takes flight and the magic of Oz comes to life.
