Hidden amongst the trees near Budapest’s City Park stands Owl’s Castle. This isn’t your typical fairytale castle. It’s a charming Art Nouveau building with a unique history. Owl’s Castle also known as Bagolyvár opened its doors in 1913. It was designed by architect Károly Kós. His style echoes Transylvanian folk art. He also designed many of the nearby zoo’s buildings. The name Owl’s Castle comes from the cluster of wooden buildings that once stood there. Owls often made their homes in these structures.

Owl’s Castle wasn’t always a restaurant. It initially belonged to the Gundel family. Károly Gundel himself oversaw the menu. The restaurant quickly gained popularity among Budapest’s bourgeoisie. Its terrace overlooked the zoo a delightful view enjoyed by guests then and now.

The restaurant’s success was tied to the Gundel family’s larger culinary empire. George Lang a renowned international restaurant consultant played a significant role in its history. He helped restore the nearby Gundel restaurant to its former glory after the Second World War. He also introduced some innovative ideas to Owl’s Castle.

Lang’s vision for Owl’s Castle was unique. He decided to staff the restaurant entirely with women. He believed that women could bring a special warmth and charm to the dining experience. His decision also offered tremendous public relations value. The walls of Owl’s Castle feature etchings and drawings of women at work and at play.

Owl’s Castle with its unique atmosphere and history continues to be a treasured part of Budapest’s culinary landscape. It offers a glimpse into the city’s rich past and its enduring connection to culinary tradition. Today it’s a venue for events serving traditional Hungarian dishes. Owl’s Castle invites you to enjoy its charm and hospitality. Its history whispers from the walls. Enjoy your visit.
