Imagine Wairaka fleeing an unwanted marriage long ago. She sought refuge on a volcanic hill. This hill became known as Ōwairaka.

Ōwairaka is a suburb in Auckland. It is named after the volcanic hill also called Ōwairaka / Mount Albert. The name honors Wairaka. She was the daughter of Toroa. He captained the Mātaatua voyaging waka. She established her people here. This was after escaping that unwanted marriage.

In the early 18th century, the Waiohua tribes heavily populated Auckland. Ōwairaka/Mount Albert served as Waiohua’s westernmost hill-top pā. It featured extensive terraces and cultivations. However, it had fewer than Maungakiekie or Maungawhau.

Later in the mid-18th century, conflict arose. Waiohua and Ngāti Whātua clashed. The area then fell under Ngāti Whātua’s control. Their population was smaller. They favored seaside living. Much of Ōwairaka fell into disuse.

Ngāti Whātua sold Ōwairaka to the Crown in 1841. This was part of a 12000-acre section. The terrain was rough. Development was slow compared to other areas. New North Road was established in the 1860s. It provided access to Ōwairaka.

Richardson Road School opened in 1929. Its name changed to Owairaka School in 1930. This followed a petition by parents.

Trams spurred suburban growth in the early 20th century. The Ōwairaka tram terminus opened in 1936. State housing projects began in the late 1930s. By the 1940s, Ōwairaka mixed rural and suburban housing.

The Owairaka Athletic Club formed in 1943. It gained prominence in the 1960s. This was due to coach Arthur Lydiard. Athletes Murray Halberg and Peter Snell excelled.

Ōwairaka became a hub for Māori and Pasifika communities in the 1970s. Gentrification forced families from central Auckland. Chinese and Somali communities grew in the 1990s and 2000s.

In June 2024, Ōwairaka’s population was estimated at 6000.

Today, Ōwairaka maintains a diverse community. The suburb has a rich history. This history includes Māori heritage and athletic achievements. It has evolved from rural land to a vibrant suburb.

Remember Wairaka. She sought refuge here. Her story echoes through this place. Her legacy continues to shape Ōwairaka.
