Ōwairaka stands before us, a striking figure cloaked in bronze. Ōwairaka is more than just a statue. She’s a testament to the strength and resilience of the women of Mount Albert. This replacement statue, erected in 2024, stands as a powerful symbol, echoing the original 1994 artwork by Christine Hellyar. The original Ōwairaka, sadly, was vandalized beyond repair in 2022. But like the women she represents, Ōwairaka has risen again. This new sculpture, cast in stronger bronze, is anchored in basalt rock, connecting her to the volcanic history of Ōwairaka/Mount Albert. The two-toned patina is a deliberate artistic choice. The blue represents the botanical side of the area, while the black symbolizes its volcanic past. Remember, this area erupted over 120,000 years ago. The women of Mount Albert funded the original statue, contributing one dollar for each year they lived in the area. The Mount Albert Community Board covered the remaining costs. The statue’s form is inspired by Wairaka, a brave ancestor of Mount Albert. She embodies the spirit of the women who settled here, raised families, and shaped this community. Look closely at the texture of the bronze. It’s not smooth. You can see the impressions of plants. This unique texture comes from the casting process. Hellyar used a mold made of sand, a central rock, and vegetation pressed into the sides. The plants were removed before pouring the molten bronze, leaving their delicate imprint. The plaque, now embedded in the walkway, encourages us to admire Ōwairaka. It reads, “This sculpture is a tribute to the women of this community.” Ōwairaka’s story is a story of loss, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
