Imagine, if you will, a former printing workshop transformed into a haven for contemporary art. That is Overgaden. It stands proudly on Christianshavn’s canal. Overgaden is a leading non-profit art institution. It focuses on emerging practices.

Founded in 1986, Overgaden has become an irreplaceable steppingstone for artists. Olafur Eliasson and Kirsten Justesen are among the many who started here. The interest in Overgaden is continuously growing. Its Open Call attracts between 500 and 600 artists’ applications annually.

For almost 40 years, Overgaden has been dedicated to young artists. It provides them with a possibility to experiment. They can develop their ideas on a grand scale. This often results in their first grand-scale solo show.

Overgaden mounts an irreverent program. It features new local and international voices in contemporary art. You will find around eight yearly grand-scale exhibitions here. There are also concerts, parlors, performances, and film screenings. Admission is free.

The building itself has a history. It was constructed in 1887. Frederik Bøttger designed it. Originally, it was a public dining facility. The Society for the Construction of Public Dining and Coffee Houses commissioned it. They aimed to provide affordable meals without wine and hard liquor. However, the society discontinued its activities in 1899.

In 1893, C. Ferslew & Co. acquired the building. They converted Overgaden into a printing workshop named Centraltrykkeriet. Later, in 1936, a funkis-style extension was added to the rear. In 1989, the building was listed in the Danish registry of protected buildings. The extension from 1936 is not part of this heritage listing.

Overgaden Neden Vandet 17 is made of red brick. It has a granite foundation. The facade features pattern brickwork and glazed details. A medallion above the main entrance shows the three towers of Copenhagen’s coat of arms.

Today, Overgaden is an independent institution. Its board includes visual artists and art professionals. They also have experts in economics, law, and business. The board ensures that Overgaden fulfills its purpose. It provides broad representation in terms of artistic standpoint and age.

As you explore Overgaden, remember its commitment to experimentation. It values the relationship between artists, institutions, and audiences. Overgaden serves as a generator for debate and knowledge. It contributes to contemporary art’s role in society.

Take your time. Immerse yourself in the art. Consider the journey of the emerging artists whose work you see here. Overgaden is not just a space. It’s a dynamic force in the art world. It fosters creativity. It challenges perspectives.
