Over Hadsten Kirke stands proudly atop a hill, almost 100 meters high, surveying the landscape. The original structure dates back to around 1200. It served as an annex to Vitten Kirke. Imagine the small community gathering here, their lives intertwined with this sacred space. Over Hadsten Kirke has seen its share of transformations. Little remains of the original 13th-century building. In 1871, Count Christian Emil Krag-Juel-Vind-Frijs, the owner from Frijsenborg, commissioned a major renovation. Architect Christian Kiilsgaaard led the project, adding the current tower and repurposing the tower room as a porch. The north and south entrances of Over Hadsten Kirke were closed off during this renovation. The church bell, cast by Stallknecht in Horsens in 1874, bears the count’s name and the year. Close your eyes and imagine the bell’s resonant tones echoing across the valley. It called people to worship, announced important events, and marked the passage of time. Three springs once flowed near Over Hadsten Kirke. Two to the east, Sct. Laurentiuskilden and Munkekilden, offered their refreshing waters. Further down, towards the present-day town, lay Helligkilden, the holy spring. These springs weren’t just sources of water. They were woven into the fabric of local beliefs and rituals. Over Hadsten Kirke is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a repository of stories, a place where the past whispers to the present.
