Did you know Outram Secondary School is one of Singapore’s oldest schools? It was founded in 1906. This long history has shaped countless lives.

Outram Secondary School started as Outram Road School. It aimed to provide English education using students’ mother tongues. The school has evolved significantly since then.

In 1939, the name changed. “Road” was removed by gazette notification. It became simply Outram School.

Originally, Outram School functioned as a primary school. It acted as a feeder to other schools. Pearl’s Hill Standard One students moved to Standard Two at Outram. Outram also fed students to Raffles Institution. This arrangement with Raffles ended during the Japanese occupation in 1942.

Tragedy struck during World War II. All of Outram School’s records from 1906 to 1942 were lost. They were sent to Pasir Panjang English School for safekeeping but the school was hit.

A major change happened in 1954. Outram School became a four-year secondary commercial school. It offered a course leading to the School Certificate of Commercial Education. The school motto changed too. “On to Success” was replaced with “Labor Omnia Vincit” meaning “Labour Conquers All”. The school crest was also updated.

Outram Secondary School has moved locations several times. In 1968, it moved from Outram Road to York Hill. In 1994, it temporarily moved to Winstedt Road. This allowed for redevelopment at York Hill. The school returned to York Hill in 1998. An official opening followed on 28 August 1999.

Interestingly, Outram Secondary School is the only government school with a swimming pool. It also enrolls deaf students who do not need sign language.

Outram Secondary School has produced many notable individuals. Wee Kim Wee became the 4th President of Singapore. Wong Kan Seng served as Deputy Prime Minister. Gurmit Singh is a famous comedian.

In 2026, Outram Secondary School will relocate to Sengkang. The current location faces falling demand. The move will cater to higher demand in the north-east area. The school will operate on two campuses until 2027. The principal, Keith Tan, ensures the school’s history will be preserved. A heritage space will be created in the new building.

So, as we stand here at Outram Secondary School, remember its journey. From a primary school to a secondary institution, its legacy continues. The school’s motto, “Labor Omnia Vincit,” reflects its enduring spirit. The school continues to shape future generations of Singaporeans.
