How many times a day do you think people walk past Out of Order Sculpture without giving it a second glance? Here in Kingston upon Thames, it’s become part of the landscape. But let me tell you, this cascading line of twelve red telephone boxes is more than just a quirky photo op. This is Out of Order, a bold statement frozen in time. Created by renowned British artist David Mach, it was unveiled back in 1989. Mach, known for his large-scale works and clever use of everyday materials, wanted to capture the essence of a fading icon. The red telephone box, once a symbol of British communication, was being phased out. Mach saw an opportunity to create a striking visual reminder of its cultural significance. The sculpture, commissioned by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, certainly caused a stir. Some loved its playful defiance of gravity, others found it jarring. But love it or hate it, Out of Order makes you stop and think. And isn’t that what great art should do?
