Do you see that brown bear sculpture over there? That’s the Ours sculpture. It is part of Xavier Veilhan’s “Les Habitants” collection.

The Ours sculpture has been here since 2006. It is a public art piece. It was commissioned by the Grand Lyon. Veilhan was chosen from four artists. The whole project cost 452,600 euros excluding tax.

The Ours sculpture is made of polyester resin. It stands near Quai Charles-de-Gaulle. Look closely. The Ours sculpture is waving with its right paw. It seems to be gesturing towards Lyon’s city center.

“Les Habitants” includes six sculptures. Besides the Ours, there are two penguins. There is also a “Grand Pingouin”. You’ll also see a “Jeune Fille en roller”. A pizza delivery guy is also part of the group. Finally, there is a man on the phone.

François Pompon was a famous animalier sculptor. Though not the creator of this bear, he is known for his “Ours Blanc”. Pompon’s “White Bear” gained him fame in 1922. He was 67 years old.

Pompon’s “White Bear” is at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. He also has one at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. Pompon was a pioneer of modern animal sculpture.

The Ours sculpture is a modern take on animal art. Veilhan’s work brings art to everyday life. It makes us think about our place in the city. Take a moment to appreciate this urban resident. It is a unique part of Lyon’s cultural landscape. It is a fun and accessible piece of art for everyone.
