“A beacon of faith in the heart of Minneapolis” you might say. That’s Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church. Established in 1987 it began as a small Bible study group. Oromo students at Luther Seminary and Augsburg College formed this group. They met weekly in homes for prayer and study.
The church’s story is one of growth and resilience. Political persecution in Ethiopia spurred Oromo immigration to Minnesota. The Bible study group expanded to meet the needs of this growing community. By 1993 the church incorporated becoming a legal entity. In 1995 they joined the Minneapolis Area Synod-ELCA. Lay members played a key role in its early success. The arrival of a pastor that year further boosted growth.
Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vital part of the Oromo diaspora. It’s also one of the largest immigrant churches in the ELCA. The church has actively supported other Oromo churches. This includes those in the US Africa and the Middle East. They even host international spiritual revival conferences. It’s a center for community and faith.
The church’s belief is centered on the Bible. They believe it’s the infallible word of God. They see it as the path to salvation through Jesus Christ. Their service is holistic. This means they strive to help their community mentally physically socially and spiritually. This encompasses a deep devotion to their faith. They also value their Oromo heritage and culture.
Today Our Redeemer Oromo Evangelical Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It’s a place where the Oromo community finds solace support and a connection to their heritage. It’s a vibrant and welcoming community. The church continues to serve its members and beyond. It is a cornerstone of the Minneapolis Oromo community. It’s a place where lives are transformed through faith and fellowship. It’s a place where you can truly feel the power of community and the strength of faith.
