Our Lady Zarvanycia Mother of God began as a mission. It was founded 48 years ago by Father Michael Chykhovsky. The mission found a home within St. James Cathedral. For years, the community worshipped in the side chapel. Services began monthly, then twice a month. Eventually, they grew to a weekly Sunday service. The name “Our Lady of Zarvanycia” refers to a town in Ukraine. This town holds a miraculous Icon of the Mother of God. It remains a pilgrimage site for Eastern Europeans. This connection imbues Our Lady Zarvanycia Mother of God with a special significance. It links the Seattle community to a rich history of faith and devotion.
The community outgrew the side chapel at St. James. Under Bishop Richard Seminack’s guidance, the search for a permanent home began. The dream was to acquire their own church building. That dream came true on October 19th. The community purchased a church on South Beacon Hill. Affectionately nicknamed “the Blue Church,” this older building needed repairs. Parishioners generously donated time, talents, and resources. They worked together to renovate their new spiritual home. The first Divine Liturgy in the “Blue Church” was planned for Christmas Day. This marked a new chapter in the story of Our Lady Zarvanycia Mother of God.
Leaving St. James was bittersweet. The community felt a strong connection to the Cathedral parish. They expressed gratitude for the years of hospitality and support. The gift of an image of Our Lady of Zarvanycia, brought from Zarvanycia itself, symbolized this gratitude. It also represents the enduring bond between the two communities. Our Lady Zarvanycia Mother of God embarked on a journey of faith and growth. It’s a journey inspired by tradition. It’s fueled by the devotion of its community. It’s guided by the grace of God.
