A cornerstone. That’s what started it all at Our Lady of the Wayside Church. This unassuming building in Arlington Heights a Northwest Chicago suburb holds a rich history. Our Lady of the Wayside Church wasn’t always this grand structure. It began humbly in the mid-1900s. Named for a 5th-century painting of the Blessed Mother the church officially opened its doors in 1952.

The community quickly outgrew the initial space. A school followed in 1953. Seven lay teachers four Dominican Sisters and three hundred eager students began their studies. The school’s growth was remarkable. By 1956 over a thousand students filled the classrooms. This necessitated a bold decision the construction of a permanent church. The temporary church was repurposed into seven more classrooms.

This growth didn’t stop. By 1965 1300 students needed even more space. In 1968 a junior high school building complete with a gymnasium opened. Today Our Lady of the Wayside School still thrives offering preschool through eighth grade education. Approximately 500 students attend the school currently.

Our Lady of the Wayside Church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith community and growth. Father Arthur Marat who arrived in 2020 shares a fascinating story about his own faith journey. He grew up in Poland influenced by his grandmother’s devoutness and the election of Pope John Paul II a deeply patriotic moment for him. His life shows the profound impact of faith.

The church’s history is a story of expansion. It reflects the growing community. It is a story of teachers sisters and students. It is about the dedication and faith that built Our Lady of the Wayside Church. From its humble beginnings as a small church to its current form Our Lady of the Wayside continues its mission. It offers spiritual guidance and education to generations in the Northwest Chicago suburbs. This cornerstone isn’t just a part of the building. It represents a foundation of faith hope and community.
