Born from the deluge of a 1957 rainstorm Our Lady of the Snows stands tall. This wasn’t just any storm. It flooded Central Manor near Midway Airport causing immense damage. But from the wreckage a new parish was born.

Our Lady of the Snows Parish is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the resilience of a community. It’s a story of faith hope and perseverance. After the flood residents petitioned for a new church and school. Their prayers were answered.

Father Leo J Kinsella took the helm in 1959. He started with a humble rectory a simple brick bungalow. Neighbors rallied providing linens food and even money to make him comfortable. His dedication laid the groundwork for the magnificent structure we see today.

The church-school building at 4810 South Leamington Avenue is a sight to behold. It wasn’t built overnight. Construction began in 1960. While it was being built Sunday Masses were held at Hearst School. Holy Days were at Richard Funeral Home. Christenings even took place in the rectory basement. Can you imagine?

The unique pre-cast cement folded plate roof of the school wing is just one feature. The original design envisioned a separate church building later. The church however remains in its present site. That’s why a renovation took place in 1986. The altar was moved the sound system updated. New lighting and flooring enhanced the space.

Our Lady of the Snows embraced growth in the following decades. Spanish and Polish speaking parishioners joined the community. Sunday masses in both languages now enrich the parish life. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2011. The church continues its important work.

This parish wasn’t born from blueprints alone. It’s a story of community spirit faith and resilience. It’s a powerful reminder that even from devastation something beautiful can emerge. Our Lady of the Snows isn’t just a church it is a living testament to that.
