How would it feel to step back in time to 1920s Epsom? Our Lady of the Sacred Heart began its story then. Epsom was just starting to grow. The land on Banff Avenue was vacant.

Let me tell you about Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. A lively Catholic community began here. It continues to grow and flourish. Today, you’ll find a church, parish hall and a school. There is also a playground and presbytery.

The people of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart have always worked together. They socialized to support Catholic activities. Groups included the Sacred Heart Confraternity and the Legion of Mary. Also the Holy Spirit Name Society in the early years. Later came the Christian Family Movement plus the Home and School Association. Not to forget the Youth Movement and the Catholic Women’s League. And St Vincent de Paul.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart has seen Boy Scouts and cubs. There were indoor bowls, dances and card evenings. Housie and table tennis were popular. Christmas afternoon tea and carols were provided for those in rest homes.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart met the challenges of Vatican II. The laity took on increasing roles. The school became integrated. Ministry demands grew with many hospitals and rest homes nearby.

We are blessed with human ability at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. This enriches our spiritual journey with liturgy preparation. Also music sacramental programs and special ministries.

Today, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart offers several weekly masses. On Tuesdays, mass is at 8 am at the Mercy Chapel. It’s at Hou Mana Wai Mercy Wellsprings. This is at 104 The Drive in Epsom. Wednesdays and Thursdays have mass at 8 am. Fridays offer mass at 12:05 pm. Adoration starts at 11 am. Saturdays have mass at 9 am. Sunday Vigil Mass is Saturday at 5:30 pm. Sunday Mass is at 9 am.

If you wish to go to confession the Sacrament of Reconciliation is Saturday 4:45-5:15 pm. The Rosary is prayed in the Church. This happens every Monday morning during school term at 9:15-9:45 am.
