Consider the story of Miss Frances Ellis. She donated generously to build this church. Our Lady of the Rosary and St Patrick’s stands as a testament to faith and philanthropy.

Welcome to Our Lady of the Rosary and St Patrick’s in Walthamstow London. This is a church with a fascinating history. It embodies architectural uniqueness. It also shows deep religious devotion.

Miss Ellis gave £1,000. She helped fund this church. She was a Catholic convert who dedicated her wealth to building churches. This one was built in 1908. Fr Benedict Williamson designed it. He was a favorite architect of Miss Ellis.

Our Lady of the Rosary and St Patrick’s exemplifies the Ellis box style. These churches have simplified Romanesque design. Stock brick was typically used. A round window often features at the west end. This church is the only Ellis church north of the Thames.

In 1930 the church expanded. The Lady Chapel the sanctuary and sacristy were added. Williamson and Foss likely designed the extensions. These additions enhanced the church’s capacity.

Original furnishings were mostly removed in the 1980s. A reordering project changed the interior. New furnishings by S.G. West replaced the old. A curved screen wall was inserted within the apse.

Look at the west facade. A wheel window is set in the gable. A tympanum mosaic shows Our Lady with the Child and St Patrick. The asymmetrical porch features a crucifix.

Inside the nave extends five bays. An organ gallery occupies the westernmost two bays. The roof has kingpost construction. The aisles and clerestory windows are round-headed. A plain arcade divides the nave and aisles.

Notice the statues in the north aisle. St Martin de Porres St Anthony and St Theresa are represented. The Lady Chapel contains a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. Statues of St Patrick and the Sacred Heart flank the sanctuary arch.

The sanctuary furnishings date from 1982-83. S. G. West designed them. They feature polished stone. A timber crucifix hangs above the altar.

The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is dimly lit. It features a glazed screen. This chapel also serves as a confessional.

The south aisle displays statues of St Joseph and Our Lady. The Stations are painted casts from 1914. The church does not have stained glass.

Our Lady of the Rosary and St Patrick’s is more than bricks and mortar. It is a spiritual haven for the community. It embodies faith architecture and history. Its story continues to inspire those who enter its doors.
