Have you ever noticed the intricate carvings on the limestone facade of this beautiful church? This is Our Lady of the Mount Church, a landmark in Chicago’s Lakeview East neighborhood, and it’s much more than just a place of worship. Founded in 1886, it was originally intended to serve as the mother parish for all English-speaking Catholic congregations on the north side. The first church building stood near Sheffield Avenue and Wellington Avenue, but it was torn down to make way for the iconic structure we see today, built in 1913. This magnificent building was designed in the English Tudor Gothic style and has since become an integral part of the community. The parish has been a beacon of hope and faith for generations of Chicagoans, and it continues to be a sanctuary for those seeking spiritual guidance. The Mount Carmel Academy, founded in 1888 by the Sisters of Mercy, stands just across the street. This school, now known as Casey Hall, reflects the long-standing commitment of the parish to education and community service.
