This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. Our Lady of Perpetual Succour stands proudly on Siglap Hill a beacon for thousands. Construction took almost seven years. It wasn’t an easy task. Donations poured in from devoted Catholics. They dreamt of a church beyond Katong. One that could accommodate the expanding community.

Fr Rene Ashness and Fr Paul Munier championed this cause. They tirelessly sought donations going door-to-door. Their dedication secured the land and funds. The final cost was a considerable sum S$283391.78.

Finally on October 7 1961 Archbishop Michael Olcomendy blessed the church. Its opening marked a significant moment. It became a spiritual home. The parish flourished. The congregation swelled to over 8500 people.

The need for expansion became apparent. More classrooms and amenities were needed. In 1993 plans for a new extension started. This included classrooms AVA rooms a library and an auditorium. The project under the leadership of Fr John Lee was completed in 1997. A time capsule was installed a legacy for future generations.

Renovations followed. The old presbytery was demolished and rebuilt. It now houses a beautiful Adoration Room The Sanctuary. The main church was also renovated. Air conditioning was added increasing seating capacity to 1600. The church now boasts a modern kitchen meeting rooms and a columbarium.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour celebrates its feast day around June 27th. In recent years the celebration has moved to October. This is closer to its original opening date. A triduum precedes the main feast day. This involves special masses and a procession. The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is blessed and crowned.

The themes of the feast days vary. They reflect different aspects of faith. The church stands as a vibrant heart of the community. It continues to serve those in need.
