Did you know that Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Glenview Illinois started as a small mission? It wasn’t always the thriving parish it is today. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church boasts a rich history. It began in the early 1900s. Glenview Catholics at the time were technically part of St Joseph’s Parish in Wilmette. Missionary priests made the long journey to Glenview to serve the community’s spiritual needs.

In 1907 eighteen families and Father William Netstraeter built the first church. The new church stood on the present site of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. It was built on land donated by Mrs William Hutchings. The building was finished that year and dedicated on All Saints Day November 1 1907.

Initially it was known as the Mission of St Joseph. In 1915 Father John Vattman renamed the parish Our Lady of Perpetual Help. This was to honor a statue of the Virgin Mary he had given to the church. Father Martin C Schmidt became the first resident pastor in 1919. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church then became a permanent parish. Legend says Father Schmidt didn’t even know where Glenview was when he was appointed. Archbishop George Mundelein’s reported response was “I don’t know You’ll have to look it up.”

The church continued to grow throughout the 20th century. Land was acquired to build a school and a convent. Father John J Dussman served as pastor for thirty-four years. He retired in 1971. He left behind a debt free parish a new church building and a strong faith community. Father Dussman’s successor Father Myles P McDonnell helped parishioners take on active leadership roles. He established the school board and the Sharing Program. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church continued its growth under subsequent pastors. In 2007 it celebrated its 100th anniversary. Cardinal Francis George celebrated the anniversary Mass. Today Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church serves approximately 3000 families. It is a testament to the enduring faith and dedication of its community. It continues to be a vibrant center of faith and service in Glenview.
