A humble wooden church stood here once. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Dromana’s story begins in 1903. Just eight Catholic families lived in Dromana then. Their dedication brought this first church to life. It was a testament to their faith.
They named it Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. A simple wooden structure. It served the small community well. This small wooden church was more than just a building. It was a beacon of hope and faith.
Years passed. More families arrived. The original church needed more space. Between 1912 and 1966 they acquired more land. The church grew alongside the community. By 1972 a new priest arrived. Fr John S Woodcock became the first parish priest of Dromana.
He oversaw the construction of a new brick church. Opened in 1975 it was a significant upgrade. This new building was larger and more modern. It better reflected the growing congregation.
Later Fr Kevin Manning’s artistic talents transformed the church. He decorated it beautifully for special occasions. Visitors flocked to see his stunning work. Easter Christmas and weddings were especially magnificent.
Sadly fire destroyed the old wooden church in 1991. It had served as the parish hall. They replaced it with a new brick hall in 1993. The Sisters of St Joseph Cluny also played a significant role. They lived nearby and supported the parish. They offered comfort and care to those in need.
The parish changed hands in 1998. The Order of St Paul the First Hermit took over. Several priests served the church over the following years. Each contributed to the church’s history and development.
From humble beginnings Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Dromana stands today. It is a testament to faith resilience and community spirit. More than a building it is a living legacy. A place where generations have found solace and fellowship.
