Legend speaks of a painting an image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia discovered in Paco Manila. The year? Some say 1621 others claim 1697. Regardless of the precise year the discovery itself was miraculous. The painting seemingly appeared and reappeared more than three times. It was found tucked within the branches of a bakawan tree near a river. The people built a small chapel a visita at the spot where the image kept reappearing. This humble beginning eventually grew into the magnificent church you see today.

The image itself is captivating. Some say the painting was brought from Salamanca Spain by the Covarrubias family. It is an easel painting an image of the Blessed Virgin appearing to Simon Vela.
